There’s a palpable buzz brewing around the North Carolina golf world, and particularly among the Village of Pinehurst golf scene in 2023.
Look no further than right here at Talamore Resort, where we have debuted our popular Toptracer Range. Toptracer technology uses high-speed cameras coupled with sophisticated computer algorithms to provide instantaneous ball tracking information. There are 10 hitting bays, TV monitors, technology and games, day and lighted night practice, and casual seating. “You can play other courses, you can play Topgolf, you can do long drives, you can do closest to the pins,” said Talamore Golf Resort General Manager Matt Hausser.
In addition, the Talamore Golf Club practice range has been upgraded and a new, 15,000-square-foot putting course has been installed between the driving range and the 10th tee boxes. Guests at the Rees Jones design at Talamore or its sister course, the Arnold-Palmer-designed Mid South Club, can warm up on the putting course, practice while waiting for Toptracer, or simply settle some bets after their round.
For more flatstick practice, miniature golf will soon make its debut in nearby Taylortown, where Miniature Golf Solutions is creating 36 holes in Olmsted Village near the corner of Highway 211 and Main Street. The design concept is expected to be a blend of traditional and more modern aesthetics and will be a combination of “old-school fun and new trends.”
Meanwhile, the USGA is in the process of constructing its second headquarters — a two-building facility called Golf House Pinehurst — while the Pinehurst Resort’s legendary No. 2 course will host the 124th U.S. Open in 2024 and will serve as the USGA anchor site for future championships in 2029, 2035, 2041 and 2047. Golf House Pinehurst will include an equipment-testing center, a visitor-friendly USGA Experience and an educational landscape feature to be completed by the end of 2023. “The USGA, along with our many partners who helped make this project a reality, share a bold vision for Golf House Pinehurst and the impact it will have on this community and the game of golf,” said Mike Whan, CEO of the USGA.
The USGA and the World Golf Hall of Fame are also in the process of creating a new visitor experience at the USGA’s Golf House Pinehurst campus that will open in 2024. World Golf Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will be held in Pinehurst in ‘24 and ‘29, to coincide with the 2024 U.S. Open and the return of back-to-back U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Open Championships, also on Course No. 2 in 2029.
In addition, Pinehurst Resort has announced a brand-new golf course for the first time in 28 years. Pinehurst’s 10th course is set to open in 2024 and will be designed by acclaimed golf course architect Tom Doak. Aside from the golf course, the site in Aberdeen will include a short course, clubhouse, guest cottages and other lodging.
Located four miles south of the main resort clubhouse, Doak’s 18-hole routing is expected to open late spring of 2024, coinciding with the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. With natural ridgelines, intriguing landforms, towering longleaf pines, streams and ponds, Doak envisions a course that complements the resort’s other courses through its contrasts.
“The site is topographically distinct and drastically different from anywhere in Pinehurst,” Doak says. “It’s bigger, bolder and more dramatic. There’s about 75 feet of elevation change, and we’ll work our way up to it around the mid-point of the layout. You’ll have expansive views from this apex over the rest of the course. It will be an unforgettable experience for golfers.”
Doak has tapped Angela Moser as his lead design associate for this project. Since 2011, she has been a key part of Doak’s Renaissance Golf team and she has contributed to several Gil Hanse projects as well, including Streamsong Black and the restoration of 2023 U.S. Open host Los Angeles Country Club.
